Why is artificial intelligence important for the healthcare system

AI is crucial for healthcare, enhancing diagnostics, personalizing care, and increasing efficiency, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has had significant adoption in various fields in recent years. Many authors have defined it as a driving force for the development of Industry 4.0, as it is a relevant component in the technological advances of various industries. In the healthcare field, it has provided numerous innovative advances in diagnosis and medical care (1). There are some main reasons why artificial intelligence can help the healthcare system, which will be listed below.

First, AI provides ease in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. In other words, it can improve diagnostic accuracy by providing physicians with tools for decision-making and reducing errors (1). This added value consequently leads to healthcare institutions being able to diagnose symptoms faster and detect more diseases in time. We can do this now because AI can use the data and analyze it to identify patterns (2).

Second, AI improves the quality of life of patients. It allows healthcare personnel to better track patients' symptoms and focus more precisely on their needs (1). For example, complex symptoms are followed up promptly, and appropriate treatment is developed for complex diseases. This allows for better medication adherence and a better patient and household experience.

Third, AI provides a decrease in health-related costs. As mentioned in a previous paragraph, AI provides ease of decision-making in medicine. Timely decisions can be made in different fields, avoiding the expenses involved in human errors. These expenses can be linked to complex treatments due to untimely diagnosis, patient transfers, and legal problems. Likewise, by identifying repetitive patterns of behavior or disease, AI opens the door to a focus on preventive medicine and public health education.

Fourth, AI broadens access to healthcare services. As AI-based tools work on clinical information, they can obtain a reliable and rapid diagnosis for many diseases without added work from healthcare professionals (3). AI can open the door to the opportunity to generate tools that are easy to use and transport for the physician. These can bring quality health services closer to the most vulnerable populations. Likewise, personalized care can be provided to the patient based on her social, political or economic needs.

In conclusion, AI and related technologies, in general, represent an opportunity for innovation for the healthcare system that can empower it in many ways. Today, outstanding results have already been seen in the field with tools such as Arkangel AI. These results improve medical care, timely diagnosis, treatment decision-making, and cost reduction for the institution, bringing health services closer together. It is expected that AI will be used more actively in the coming years.
